Cracks in My Psyche

IMG_2268“Well, sometimes I think that when you get high or when you drink – when you alter your consciousness – it weakens you psychically [mentally], like it creates cracks and then bad stuff can seep into those cracks and maybe never go away.”

This quote comes from a scene in the movie, Sunshine Cleaning. As I was watching it, I thought, what a great way to express something so true and so profound. There is really nothing I can add to that statement. It’s completely true and stands on its own without needing any further explanation.

At at time when the norm is to make drug and alcohol use seem so acceptable and normal, I commend the writer for taking the time to address this issue. I believe this is the first time I saw a writer take a minute and say, “Hey, there is something wrong with drug and alcohol use.”

To see what others are saying about how drugs effected them personally, I recommend these videos: Personal Stories.

    Hello Sigal,

Interesting. I guess I’ve always thought that the cracks in the psyche were there first. then the drugs and alcohol were an attempt to fill in the cracks rather than creating them.

Addiction is a complex subject that is hard even for those of us who somewhat “get it” to understand.

It takes a lot of courage and strength to examine our cracks and heal without denial in drug or alcohol consumption.

I think God is the ultimate crack filler though and without him, most addicts are pretty much doomed to fall back into sooner or later.

    Hoping you are well.

I think that life and experiences that we don’t have the knowledge to deal with leaves us more and more disheartened as a being over time. The most important thing to realize is those experiences are not who we are. Nor is any non-optimum “solution” we come up with – like drugs – either illegal drugs or prescription drugs including psyche drugs.

I just loved that movie and don’t remember that quote – but it is really interesting. I don’t believe that the effects of drugs and alcohol really are done just because we have “come down” from a high. It really makes sense that as the drugs truly alter our sanity and our abilities to really handle life that the damage to the psyche just increases over time, thus diminishing our abilities to handle life.

    Great post!

Thank you Mary. Exactly; drugs create more and more damage and the original problem was never solved in the first place. Thank you for stopping by my blog.

    Hello Magnolia,

Your comment is totally valid. I agree that there are always cracks first. But new cracks are added and old cracks widened with drug and alcohol use. I guess the point is that drugs are not crack fillers even though they may seem like it in the short term.

And yes, God and spirituality are the key to living and being happy. Psychiatry will have us believe that we are all animals, made of chemicals and that the chemicals determine who we are. That is so far from true it is actually criminal to “sell” that line to the public. We are spiritual beings and God is to each of us different but still there. This is why drugs will NEVER solve anything. They simply cannot. We, as spiritual beings, are the problem solvers.

    Thanks again for stopping by.

    Hey Sigal,

Long time. I got your email this morning and didn’t realize how long it had been since I left that comment. But, you’ve been busy it sounds. :)

Hope the move(s) went well for you. Moving is not high on my list of favorite things to do. Yuck. Talk about stressors.

Glad to see you back in the swing of things though.

    Take care,
    Magnolia
